Attendance has been really low at meetings, so it seems to me that interest in this busy little robotics team is waning.  Well WAKE UP gentlemen because we're not done yet, we stay busy year round on this team and whether you're graduating in a month or haven't been to a meeting in 2 months, you can still take pride in putting in work to make the team better in years to come.

  • Cage Cleanup - It's taking a long time, we have to get it done.
  • Monty - May 15.  We're in.  Now we have to pay for it.  We can also bring our swollen purple battery to Monty as part of their recycling drive.  There is a ::COUGH COUGH:: Woodie Flowers Jr. Award at Monty, which has a due date of May 8 for the essay submission.
  • Bake Sale - To pay for Monty.  This Tuesday, May 4.  Please give Baldwin your schedule so we can man the table for the whole day.  And bring baked goods.
  • The cRIO - We've shipped the old one back, in a few more business days we should get a working one.
  • Relay for Life - June 19.  Our team is registered, though right now our team consists of Tom and me.  Join at this link - http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?pg=team&fr_id=20713&team_id=715441  I heard that Iron Maidens have been invited.
  • AIDS Walk - The day after Monty.  I go every year anyway, but I heard that Iron Maidens have invited us.  We have to figure out if we're going as a team with a robot or as a team or just some of us as individuals or what.
  • Mag Fundraising - Kevin's idea from months ago finally got approved, so yet another little fundraising activity we'll be signing up for.
  • Think Recycle - Still going.  As part of cage cleanup, we need boxes to fit all the big laser cartridges we have.  Shipping labels are ready, we just need to box them and get them out of the cage.  We also need a box to ship back the big pneumatic piston for a $100 refund.
  • Shirts and Hoodies - You owe me money, since I paid the bill already.  T-shirts $8.25, hoodies $22.  Word on the golf shirts will come soon but as of right now they're still being put together.
  • Fundraising in general - I'm going to be meeting with the Development Office, but it was recently suggested to me that we try asking big companies for less than we usually have thought.  You guys need to put in work on this, because you can actually produce better results than I can.

Don't cryo over the cRIO PDF Print E-mail

So I just got off the phone with Olivia from National Instruments (of course she remembered me immediately) and she said that they have some FRC-cRIOs in stock but priority must be given to teams whose cRIOs break but still have official regionals or the championship to attend.  I told her we want to compete in May, and she said to call her after the championship, April 17, to see what they still have.  I asked if, in the event that they run out, we're out of luck until next kickoff, and she didn't know the answer to that.

What do we do now?  If you guys want, we could start by nicely asking team 1880 for a longer-term loan of their extra cRIO.

Kickoff Permission Slips PDF Print E-mail

Monday, 21 December 2009 16:16

Please see the forum for attached papers:

  • School Permission Slip for Kickoff
  • FIRST Consent & Release form for Kickoff
  • Food & Phone Number List for your parents

Also, FIRST wants to build a database of student team members and their parents, so please check out their electronic consent & release form here:  https://my.usfirst.org/frc/goteams/site.lasso

Merry Christmas and a happy new year to the entire team and to all your families.  To be honest, I am not thrilled at the workrate and ambition I have seen on average across the whole team.  There are important things that should have been done before Christmas break, which did not get done.  I hope you all come back energized and ready to have the best season we can have.  In order for that to happen, you guys need to go hard in all aspects, because I will not do things for you which you should be doing.

According to our attendance requirements, we currently have a 19 man team heading into the Build Season.  Expect at least 1 new mentor's help starting in January, and one of these potential mentors has human resources experience and I have asked him to help scheduling meeting attendance.

Long Island Regional PDF Print E-mail

A spot opened up at the Long Island Regional and we were offered the spot.  I confirmed our acceptance of the spot because I didn't want to lose it in case we do manage to raise $4,000 by January 15.  So as of right now, we're no longer waitlisted for Long Island, we're registered and unpaid so far.  Let this be some extra motivation to do work in the area of fundraising.  Go Blacksmiths!

December at a Glance PDF Print E-mail

Kickoff is almost here!  Here are some of our target issues for the remainder of 2009:

  • You guys can and should come in on Saturday 12/5 to put the finishing touches on preparation for Lunacy on Earth even though I'll be proctoring the SAT from about 8:00-3:00.  Check the forum post with the email about the event for the checklist of things we need to have prepped/packed.  Seniors, you will be the responsible leaders in the cage during that time, so please get there at the beginning of the meeting, which is basically up to your decision.
  • Shopping List - we absolutely want the most complete order possible of stock material, tools, etc. to be placed before Christmas break.  On the cage computer is a short list of items we need, and during December we need to develop that further and decide quantities based on price and our budget.
  • Prototyping - I've heard that a cart is on your minds to design and build for December.  That needs to be brainstormed, sketched, SolidWorksed, and then fabricated.  If a sub-group of you guys want to focus on something else, talk about it and get planning.

Meeting Thanksgiving Saturday 11/28 PDF Print E-mail

If I can't get out of proctoring the SAT on Saturday 12/5, then we really only have 12/2 to meet before Lunacy on Earth.  Because of this possibility, I want to confirm that I'm going to be at school for a meeting this Saturday, 11/28, if some mechanical people want to come to work on the wheels and if some programming people want to come to install and play with WindRiver and if other people want to contemplate the game rules and possibilities for the Lunacy on Earth challenge.

2005 Gallery, Poly, Lunacy on Earth PDF Print E-mail

News Headlines:

  • I have obtained some yearbook photos of the 2005 robot at the Long Island Regional which had previously been lost to us, so we have a brand new section of the gallery.
  • Please check the forums and leave a post about whether or not you want to go to Poly tomorrow.  I think the majority of the team plans on going to Poly, and all who have gone the last 2 weeks (including me) think that they are a very good experience and worth everybody attending.
  • LUNACY ON EARTH - I signed us up for it.  December 6 in Queens.  It's free.  it's an obstacle course and a programming challenge (except we're using 2009 robots instead of identical Tetrix boxbots).  More details and files in the forum.
  • Freshman Assembly - Not 11/23 as originally planned.  Mr. Wilson will keep me posted but we're looking at the first week of December.  Use the forums to plan who will say what at assembly.
